Everyone of a certain age would probably be able to associate VW to the hippie culture that was prevalent in the mid-60s, particularly the VW Bug and VW Combi (also called the Hippie Bus). Indeed, arts and crafts is  nothing new to the “People’s Car” brand which is why VW looks so at home with the Urbanscapes event currently held in Padang Astaka, PJ. Urbanscapes is the city’s first and only all-day creative arts festival that brings together communities and participants from the fields of music, arts, fashion, visual design and much more and will be held for 2 days from 24th to 25th November 2012.

I’ve always thought the Astaka field wasn’t particularly big but somehow with all the stages set in, there’s always something new to discover. Be warned: Expect lots of mud when you go so wearing Phua Chu Kang’s yellow boots would look pretty alright here.

Looking at the artist line-up, the event promises an evening of entertainment and fun. Sorry, folks … no weeds allowed here.

There was an interesting contest run by VW: What does German engineering mean to you? Instead of answering in words, contestants must reply with a piece of art meant to decorate a Polo Sedan. The winner, Foong Teck Hee got a chance of seeing his rendering come to life and it is pretty outstanding.

Don’t know why but I keep thinking about Ribena. Kudos Mr Foong.

There was also a VW pavilion of cars where the more affordable models were on display. With mud everywhere, visitors are required to remove their shoes prior to entering.

Sadly I was unable to stay for the main evening event but all in all, despite a short visit, I had fun there. Do drop by if your Sunday is a little free and just let loose. It’s certainly an experience that’s hard to come by.

.

P.S: I still think they should have displayed the new Beetle there …. it would have been a lot more symbolic. Still, I think it’s pretty cool of VW to support this event …. come to think of it, there is no other brand more suited to hold the role of automobile partner for an event that rejoices in human creativity, freedom, expression and youth.

Though working in a field completely unrelated to the automotive industry, kenso has always had an interest in dabbling into the automotive industry, particularly business related aspects such as sales, marketing, strategic planning, blah blah blah. You can probably find better sources of technical specifications elsewhere if you dig long enough in the internet as this blog talks about the real life ramifications of who, what, where, when and why of the automotive world and focuses on relevant information to potential buyers.
