The Boss is here. BMW Group Malaysia today introduced the third generation of its leading model in the Premium Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment, the All-New BMW X5. Bosses will have two variants to choose from; the BMW X5 xDrive35i and BMW X5 xDrive30d oil burner. the All-New BMW X5 establishes a new benchmark in premium sports activity driving and further expands BMW’s leading role in the premium automotive industry with improved performance and efficiency along with enhanced handling, comfort, versatility and luxurious ambience.

Presenting the All-New BMW X5, Dr. Gerhard Pils, Chief Executive Officer of BMW Group Malaysia said, “Since its original introduction in 1999, the BMW X5 has remained the uncontested market leader in the premium SAV segment to this day. It is a matter of fact that the BMW X5 is known as ‘The Boss!’ and we now welcome a new Boss in Malaysia.”

 

Dr. Pils added that the third generation BMW X5 will continue its lead in the Premium SAV segment as the vehicle offers the perfect balance of award-winning design, sporty and aggressive performance across multiple terrain as well as luxurious aesthetics and advanced technological innovation courtesy of BMW EfficientDynamics and BMW ConnectedDrive.

Design

.

From the front, the All-New BMW X5 features twin headlight units which extends all the way to the kidney grille, and is combined with Adaptive LED headlights and LED fog lights. The X5 is the first BMW model to features distinctive aerodynamic features such as Air Curtains for the front apron which guides air flow over the wheels before exiting via the Air Breathers found on the side walls. Aeroblades found at the rear of the car which are harmoniously integrated to reduce drag.

Underneath, the All-New BMW X5 has underbody protective elements made of stainless steel, air inlet trim elements, kidney grille slats and a rear trim strip in Matte Silver as well as the BMW Individual Exterior Line in Satin Aluminium. It measures 4,886mm long (which is 30mm longer than the previous model), 1,938mm wide and rides 13mm longer.

Performance

.

The xDrive35i is equipped with a six-cyclinder in-line petrol engine which delivers a maximum output of 225 kW / 306 hp with torque peaking at 400Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is done in just 6.5 seconds (which is 0.3seconds faster than its predecessor) with a recorded fuel savings of  8.5 litres per 100km and C02 emissions of a 199 grams per 100 kilometre.

The xDrive30d meanwhile, is powered by a six-cyclinder diesel engine which boasts 190 kw / 258 hp with a peak torque of 560Nm; enabling the car to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds with a reduced carbon emission of 164g/km and a lowered fuel consumption of 6.2 litre per 100 kilometre.

Both are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and fuel consumption is now reduced by up to 16 per cent compared to the 2nd generation X5.

Ride and Handling

.

Through the Driving Experience Control button, drivers can change the overall character of the car; select ECO PRO for optimum fuel savings. Also available as standard and which joins forces with the Navigation System Professional is the Route-Ahead Assistant which uses data from the navigation system to recognize bends, city, town and village boundaries, as well as speed restrictions along the route to provide drivers with tips on reducing the throttle in advance.

The new X5 features the BMW x-Drive all-wheel drive system which is able to perform fast and precise adjustments of the torque split to prevents understeer, ensuring not only top-tier driving dynamics but also the best possible traction on slippery surfaces or dirt roads. The car also features a new electromechanical power steering.

Exclusive for the xDrive35i, the Adaptive Comfort Suspension Package is an adaptive suspension package that matches the driving style and individual preferences of the driver as closely as possible with high-level driving dynamics and ride comfort. Features include the Dynamic Damper Control function and a self-levelling pneumatic rear suspension.

Cabin Convenience

.

Fine luxurious ambience and superior functionality is what the new BMW X5 offers as well as a generously spacious and comfortable cabin. Behind, new X5 features a 40/20/40 split for its rear-seat backrest and has a luggage capacity of 1,870 litres, marking a 120 litre increase. The car has a two-part tailgate which can now be opened by simply pressing a button from the driver’s seat. Additionally, automatic tailgate operation of the upper section is available as standard and can also be opened and closed via remote.

For seats, full-leather Dakota Terra upholstery is made exclusively for the All-New BMW X5 xDrive35i with an interior trim of Fine-wood American Oak and is fitted with a sports leather steeering wheel with gearshift paddles. Meanwhile, the interior trim of the BMW X5 xDrive30d is complimented with highlight trim finishers in Oxide Silver Dark Matte and a sports leather steering wheel.

Also only found in the BMW X5 xDrive35i are two additional seats attached to the third seat row which transforms the car into a seven-seater. Adults would find it a tight squeeze in the 3rd row though and it’s an ideal place for kids aged 8-10 years. Unlike some MPVs which folds the second row seats, the X5’s second rows can only be tilted instead of folded Do note that with the 3rd row seats up, luggage space is compromised at the back. If it’s down, you can get 650litres of space (up 30litres from the old) and if the 2nd row is also down, the cargo space gets boosted up to 1,870litres.

For interior lighting, the All-New BMW X5 now features LED technology with ambient lighting including the “Welcome” lighting with nine pre-defined lighting designs sets the mood and tone inside the new premium SAV. Other LED light sources placed in locations such as the dashboard trim, the front and rear footwells as well as the door compartments or door inserts further convey a harmonious luxurious lounge-like atmosphere.

BMW ConnectedDrive is standard here with both variants and offers an extensive range of mobility services and driver assistance systems. What’s not standard is a full-colour BMW Head-Up Display that’s only available with X5 xDrive35i which projects relevant information directly into the driver’s field of vision, allowing him or her to always remain focused on the road ahead. The information projected includes essential vehicle information as well as infotainment messages. Also new in the All-New BMW X5 is an iDrive Touch Controller for even more outstanding in-car connectivity which allows intuitive and convenient operation of the iDrive operating system in the vehicle. Destination addresses or telephone numbers can be easily entered with your handwriting via a touchpad integrated into the controller.

The All-New BMW X5 also features enhanced functionality and refinement in its driver assistance systems which now include the Anti-dazzle High-Beam Assistant. This function allows night-time driving to be even more pleasant and safe by optimally illuminating the road with high-beam lights without dazzling other road users. Also new is the Surround View Camera system which allows drivers to manoeuvre easily through tight spaces by providing an accurate birds-eye view of the surrounding area which is shown on the control display. This is also combined with Side View functions which assists the driver when approaching areas with limited visibility.
