Launching a car in an airport isn’t something new. I remember coming across it once when BMW launched the Mini with the car being flown in a C130 Hercules plane and being driven out from its cargo hold. Thought I’d seen the last of any car being showcased on airport tarmac. I was wrong.

Nasim and Peugeot today launched the entire fleet of 508s at the Subang Terminal 3 Airport under the theme Beyond First Class. The event was opened for media only and under tight security from the airport authorities. Members of the media drove their cars into the private lounge of private travelers and their cars were then ushered away by the valet. After collecting the media kit, we were then guided to the lounge where even their toilet puts 5 star hotels to shame.

At any rate, customary to any Peugeot car launches, good food, fine looking models and of course, the star vehicle(s) were part of the agenda.

As of today, you now have 5 variants as opposed to just one 508 to choose from:-

In sedan form, you have the Standard, Premium and GT whereas in Station Wagon, you can have the 508SW (similar specifications as the Premium) and the 508SW GT. The difference is as follows:-

508 Standard – Priced at RM155,888 OTR with insurance

  • 1.6litre THP engine with 156bhp, 240Nm torque
  • Front suspension Macpherson with helical springs and dampers and anti roll bar

  • Wheels 215/60 R17
  • Boot  space: 545litres
  • Max boot space with rear seats folded: 1,581litres

  • Conventional key & handbrake
  • Audio: World in Peugeot 8 speakers with USB, MP3, CD and Bluetooth

  • Leather + Fabric seats
  • 8 way electric front seats with electric lumbar support

So at RM14,000 cheaper than the current 508 Premium spec, you lose the KEYSSEY, Quad Zone Auto Air Conditioning, Smart Adaptive Beam, color HUD, Electronic Parking Brake, Available Space Measurement (ASM) Aid and full leather seat. For the price of about RM156k, you still have 6 airbags, ESP, ABS, EBD, EBA, ASR, DSC, Hill Start Assist …. its quite obvious who Peugeot is gunning for with this model … especially certain Japanese models sells for about RM158k and offers not even half of the safety features the 508 Standard has.

508 Premium – Priced at RM169,888 OTR with insurance

Having written about the 508 before, you can find more detailed information in the following link:

http://www.kensomuse.com/peugeot-508-closeted-in-luxury-without-paying-a-luxury-price-2/

508 SW – Priced at RM179,888 OTR with insurance

Specifications is the same as the 508 Premium except for the following:-

  • Boot space: 660litres/758litres with boot shelf folded
  • Max boot space with rear seats folded: 1,865 litres

  • Panoramic roof

  • Motorized tailgate

508 GT – Priced at RM199,888 OTR with insurance

Again, essentially the same specifications as the 508 Premium except for the following:

  • 2.2litre HDI FAP Direct Injection Diesel engine with 204bhp, 450Nm torque. The car engine was on so I could hear the diesel clutter. Wasn’t that bad to my ears but I have to confess I haven’t driven that many diesels around.

  • Cohiba Nappa Brown Leather

  • 8 way Electric Front seats with Electric Lumbar Support PLUS driver seat memory setting and massage function
  • Double Wishbone and Drop Link Hub Carrier
  • New 6-speed automatic gearbox AM6, sourced from AISIN and designed to withstand the awesome 450Nm torque the engine generates.
  • Zero to hundred is estimated to be achieved in 8.2 seconds (vs 9.2 seconds for the equivalent 1.6THP powered variants)

  • Wheels sized 235/40 R19

508SW GT – Priced at RM209,888 OTR with insurance

Again, essentially the same specifications as the 508SW except for the items listed above in the 508GT.

Twin exhaust

Strangely enough, the 508SW GT on display had black leather instead of Cohiba Nappa Brown as listed on the brochure.

The 508SW GT also takes slightly longer to achieve century sprint; requiring 8.4seconds (vs 9.5seconds in the 508SW)

So, those who have purchased the 508 earlier (now effectively called the 508 Premium), any regrets for not waiting? In terms of monthly repayment, it should look something like this (assuming interest rate is at 2.5% and you take a full loan of 90%):

Standard Premium 508SW 508 GT 508SW GT
5 years 2630.63 2850.00 3018.75 3356.25 3525.00
7 years 1962.53 2126.19 2252.08 2503.87 2629.76
9 years 1591.37 1724.07 1826.16 2030.32 2132.41

Ah, choices, choices, choices …. it’s like falling in love with Sophie Marceau and discovering she has 4 other sisters with different …. endowments but look almost identical to her.

Good write up mate. Simple and nice and don’t bore readers with details. Very useful facts and figures too especially the comparison part.

Is there a typo on the tyre size for the Standard?

    • June 19, 2012 at 6:41 am — Reply

Good spotting. I re-checked the brochure and press handouts and there is indeed a mismatch between the two. Brochure states 215/55 R17 whereas press kit says 215/60 R17. I’ll try to get a clearer picture today and update accordingly

Test drove the 508 (prior to this launch) and wasn’t impressed with the car compared to the Passat. However, that amount of torque on the GT version may just change the game. 450nm!! You can drag a boat along on your daily office commute and probably not feel the weigh.

Good write up! Very informative indeed especially with the loan calculations.
But for photos, you missed some of the important ones!
You have more 508 pictures than those pretty lasses!
Readers missed these 508 pictures can still go to showroom but not those lasses!

Thanks bro. Like I said, my crappy photography skills had all the people pictures showing up blur. At any rate, it’s the same models as those in the 408 launch and I’m sure for future launches too. You want me to get their numbers for you too, bro? 😛

Is it just me or does the 508 rear legroom look less roomy compared to 408?

    • Lowpro
      June 19, 2012 at 2:56 pm — Reply

The 408 actually looks roomier due to the smaller seats. So, you actually feel like it is more spacious and roomy inside, but a little less cozy. Perhaps it actually is more spacious! Maybe Kenso can shed some light on this?

      • June 19, 2012 at 5:23 pm — Reply

The 408 does indeed have better rear legroom. Whether it’s due to smaller seats or not, I’d need to use my bum to measure again 😛

Having said that, both 408 and 508 are comfortable behind

Wow..another option with the new price point for 508 Std. Was considering the VW Jetta, Pug 408 and now perhaps 508 Std.

Kenso, any ideas if the models are still CBU or CKD?

    • June 19, 2012 at 5:22 pm — Reply

      Hi bro, they’re all CKD

I haven’t been keeping myself updated with Pugs. When Naza says CKD, they really mean SKD, right? Ignoring the 408.

I feel chrostrophobic seating at the back of the Jetta. Those two front seats are just huge and you could hardly see anything in front. And if you compare it agains the 408T / 508 Premium, it doesn’t come with leather seats.

One of the biggest challenge with Nasim is that you can hardly test drive their 508s. THeir test drive cars are on rotation which is a hassle. I hope they will bring in more test drive cars after this launch.

Pug sales person told me that they lost a lot of clients to VW because of availability of test drive cars.

          • Lowpro
            June 20, 2012 at 8:22 am

Yup. The rotation thingy is a real hassle with custoemrs needing to hunt for the test drive schedules given out monthly. One tip is to ask the branch manager to let you see the rotation list so that you will know where the cars will be. BUT… if they are selfish, they may just tell you when the car will be at their own branch so that they get the sale. In any case, you can also ask the people at CLIC to help out. Pretty sure they can dig out the schedule for you.

    • June 20, 2012 at 6:25 am — Reply

That would definitely be a welcome, bro …. provided you can make it in time for the launch, mate. For example, the Peugeot launch took place in Subang Skypark at 5.30pm. Most of my friends were either just finishing work from some place far or still working

Good to know Naza is launching Peugeot in force. The range is almost complete, from entry level sedan, MPV, CUV, etc….well done! Time for the Jap competitors to improve their car rather than just relying on reliability and resale value as their selling point.

It seems to be a good time to buy a continental car now. I believe they will have better resale value which truly reflects on its price.. even better, they have become more affordable to the public.

Can you imagine that the 407 was sold at 170k (CBU) back then? WHen Naza brought in the CKD, it was reduced significantly. By the way, unless one is a Toyota fan, I really don’t see how 180k for the 2.5 Camry is justifiable.

RIght now, I think Naza and VGM are both doing a great job in bringing in contis at a more reasonable price.

FYI, my mom who is at 58 just told me that I’m not looking at the Hondas and Toyotas anymore. She lacks confidence in them, especially in safety features. She’s looking at VW and Pugs. Premium contis are not within her budget, so she was looking at the 150 – 170k range VW / Pug / H / T.. Paradigm shift.

Great writeup kenso! Wonder if the GT can take our hopeless diesel, or has the engine been downtuned? Any ideas?

    • Lowpro
      June 21, 2012 at 7:40 am — Reply

Surprisingly, it can because what the pumps don’t tell you is that diesel quality has been progressively improved without anyone’s notice simply because there is no major price hike in the fuel. No downtune of the engine nor removal of the FAP like some brands do. Peugeot’s FAP for Malaysia is specified to last up to 9 years or 180,000km. The particulate filter, if removed, releases toxic emissions (to humans and not just the ozone) into the atmosphere.

Also, Automobiles Peugeot ASEAN and Nasim have been testing diesel cars in Malaysia very quietly for a year to two already without any issues in a few models instead of just the 508.
