It was a sad day on 27 August when we found we were running out of bandwidth. This wasn’t the first time but each time, there were contingencies and it was just a matter of upgrading the package; from 5GB to 10GB to ultimately 20GB. Last month, it crossed the 20GB mark and some monies were paid to temporarily increase the bandwidth by 10GB which lasted like 4 days before the counter resets back to 20GB again. Last month, we hit almost 10,000 unique browsers (well, it would have certainly passed the mark if we had remained online) and over 70,000 page views within that single month.
Seeing the imminent arrival of the bandwidth limit was like being stuck on a runaway train barreling towards the end of line and you have no way of stopping it. So we did what we could …. we tried contacting the webserver and asked for a similar temporary upgrade for a fee but they denied our request and asks for more than RM1,000 for the next upgrade to 30GB which is insane. We then tried removing virtually all the articles except for a few, we posted heads-up messages on Facebook but it was too late. Within 2 hours, the highway to kensomuse.com was shut down and we had no way to even access the admin page.
We had contingencies but it was too late to implement them. kensomuse continues to grow at a spectacular rate (thanks to you, our dearest readers) and will one day be recognized as one of the most comprehensive automotive review site in Malaysia. For this to be reality, we have to move to a much later server and by the 6 month anniversary (which would fall on 24 Sept), we would have fully migrated to an offshore account that promises a bandwidth as wide as a couple of oceans. By then an incident like this should not happen again and kensomuse will forever be ready for you to access (if you have not done so, please bookmark the page :P)
Last but not least, we at kensomuse sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused during this outage. I know it’s frustrating when you read something that a friend/auntie/uncle/mom/dad just HAVE to read it only to find a while 509 page staring back at you. I can only give you the assurance that we will do everything there is within our power to ensure such an incident will never happen again. Happy Independence Day, Malaysia!
